Liver function tests (LFT) typically include ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, and albumin. They screen for hepatitis, fatty liver, gallstone-related obstruction, alcohol-related injury, and medicine side effects (common with long-term painkillers or herbal products). Abnormal values usually need repeat testing and sometimes ultrasound rather than treatment based on one report alone.

Overnight fasting of 8–12 hours is often requested so triglycerides and glucose do not interfere with interpretation when LFT is bundled with a metabolic panel. Avoid heavy alcohol for 48 hours before the test. Inform the lab if you have jaundice, are pregnant, or had a recent hepatitis vaccine.
